OOO — Out Of Office

Last updated: 2026-02-02

In plain English

OOO means the person isn’t working right now.
They’re on vacation, sick leave, or otherwise unavailable.

In theory.

What they actually mean

OOO means “I’m not here” — but not necessarily “I won’t respond”.

Most OOO messages are followed by checking email anyway,
just in case something is urgent.

Being out of office often just means being slower, not absent.

Example

“I’m OOO today, but feel free to reach out if something is urgent.”

Does it actually matter?

Yes — culturally.
✅ If OOO is respected, people can disconnect.
⚠️ If it isn’t, burnout quietly becomes normal.

⚠️ OOO only works when everyone agrees it does.
