A Critical Success Factor is a key area or condition that must be achieved for an organization or initiative to succeed.

A CSF is something that must go right for success to be possible.
Not nice-to-have. Not optional.

It answers the question:
“If this fails, does anything else even matter?”

What they actually mean

CSFs are often confused with KPIs.

KPIs measure performance.
CSFs define survival.

If everything is labeled “critical”, nothing actually is — and priorities quietly collapse.

A real CSF forces uncomfortable trade-offs and hard decisions.

Example

“System reliability was identified as a CSF, so missing the SLO triggered immediate escalation — even though other KPIs still looked fine.”

Does it actually matter?

Yes — strategically.
CSFs help leaders decide where focus, budget, and risk tolerance actually belong.
Without clear CSFs:


You can hit all your metrics and still fail —
if you miss the wrong CSF.
